Entry to Ireland and The United Kingdom
VisitIreland routinely books visitors from around the world who wish to travel to Ireland and The United Kingdom. VisitIreland accepts no responsibility and cannot be held liable by parties who do not have proper identification or are denied entry by government authorities of Ireland or The United Kingdom for any reason. It is the sole responsibility of the traveler to ensure that they have proper identification and documentation for legal entry.
Traveler Delays, Early Arrivals or Departures
Under no circumstances can
VisitIreland be held accountable for circumstances beyond our control
including but not limited to those that may arise from traveler delays,
early arrivals or departures.
Acceptable Methods of Payment
Delivery of Travel Documents and Vouchers
VisitIreland accepts the following major credit cards: MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover. Bank/Debit Cards are accepted provided they are part of either the Visa or MasterCard network. All charges will appear in US Dollars and converted to the appropriate national currency based on the credit card processors prevailing exchange rates at the time of transaction. VisitIreland is not responsible for any additional transactional fees or charges imposed by the individual bank or issuing Credit Card Company.
Self-drive travel documents including touring guides, accommodation directories and maps will be shipped within three (3) business days of acceptance and payment processing by VisitIreland. If we are out of stock of any item(s) a second delivery will be made as soon stock arrives at VisitIreland. Under certain circumstances vouchers will not be issued until thirty (30) days prior to scheduled departure. It is the responsibility of the traveler to inform VisitIreland of any early departure. Under no circumstances will VisitIreland issue vouchers until payment in full is processed.
Shipping and Delivery
VisitIreland routinely ships orders worldwide. All orders will be processed and shipped from either the USA or the Republic of Ireland. All international orders will be shipped via courier (Federal Express, DHL or similar) and are subject to the following additional delivery fees: Canada and Mexico $ 25, Great Britain, Scandinavia and Western Europe $ 35, Eastern Europe $ 45, all other locations including South America, Africa, Asia and the Pacific Rim $ 60 (Please note: All International delivery costs are in United States Dollars and are in addition to prices quoted). Unless otherwise instructed all orders within the USA, Puerto Rico and The Republic of Ireland will be shipped via Priority Mail (USA) or SDS Post (Republic of Ireland) at no additional fee. Domestic express courier service (Federal Express, DHL or similar) is available for an additional fee of $25 United States Dollars. All orders will be shipped with via traceable means with delivery confirmation. VisitIreland is not responsible for lost or stolen shipments once they arrive at their delivery address. Unless VisitIreland is expressly otherwise instructed in writing all deliveries will be carried out without the requirement of a signature (unless imposed by the courier) and delivery confirmation will serve as proof of delivery.
The self-drive packages offered by VisitIreland offer flexible go as you please travel. Accommodation bookings can be made in advance or as you travel. All accommodations have listed addresses and telephone numbers and most have email capability. It is the responsibility of the traveler to make all accommodation bookings and adhere to all cancellation policies. All accommodations and rooms are subject to availability. When making reservations it is standard for the accommodation to request a credit card number to “guarantee” a reservation (including those being paid by voucher). Under no circumstances do we recommend credit card information be emailed unless it is done so in a secure environment. Use of all vouchers is subject to the guidelines and rules as set forth by the appropriate issuer and/or provider including but not limited to Town & Country Homes, Irish Farmhouse Holidays, Discover Travel and Tours, The Circle and the Manor House and Country Hotel Associations.
Changes and Amendments
Changes and amendments will be carried out at cost of $25 United States Dollars per item. VisitIreland requires a minimum of three (3) business days to conduct any and all changes. In addition, if the supplier charges an additional fee or there is a rate increase the traveler will be liable for any additional cost. VisitIreland will make every reasonable effort to accommodate all change requests. However, in some instances requests simply not be able to be met due to unavailability and/or other extenuating circumstances beyond our control. Therefore, once booked, we cannot guarantee that requests for changes and alterations can be made. Please be advised that changes made less than ten (10) business days prior to departure may be subject to additional service fees and penalties.
Review of Documents
It is the responsibility of the traveler to carefully review all shipments and notify VisitIreland within five (5) business days of proof of delivery for any and all discrepancies.
Refunds and Cancellations
Travel package cancellations will be subject to the following penalties. Cancellations are subject to return of all travel materials and all vouchers must be original unaltered.
On all Ireland self-drive packages the following cancellation schedule applies:
Credits and Changes
- 60 or more days before date of arrival 25% of total package price
- 59 –31 days before date of arrival 50 % of total package price
- 30-11 days before date of arrival 75 % of total package price
- 10 days or less 90%
In the event of a postponement or change in travel plans VisitIreland will credit 80% of all monies paid toward any future booking. It is the responsibility of the traveler to cancel any and all reservations that were made personally. In order to receive a credit all vouchers and documentation must be returned to VisitIreland prior to ten (10) business days of scheduled departure. VisitIreland will make every effort to maximize credits on short notice cancellations in which ten (10) business days or less notice is provided. All short notice cancellations are subject to any and all additional penalties and fees imposed directly or indirectly to VisitIreland by suppliers. In the event that travel may not be commenced by one or more of the named parties bookings may be assignable to another traveler (certain rules and restrictions may apply).Limits of Liability
Under no circumstances will VisitIreland and its suppliers be held responsible for circumstances beyond their control. In addition under no circumstances will VisitIreland be held liable for negligence on part of the traveler, third party, supplier or vendor. VisitIreland cannot be held liable for an amount greater than the initial purchase price. VisitIreland shall not be a party to disputes that arise from any arrangements made outside of or not under the control of VisitIreland including but not limited to optional insurance, any and all damages, applicable supplements and ancillary charges.
VisitIreland is incorporated in The State of Pennsylvania, United States of America. Any legal disputes will be subject to the prevailing Laws of The United States of America and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The following terms and conditions are effective as of January 1, 2005 and subject to alteration by jurisdictional requirements, VisitIreland or supplier(s) without prior notification. All terms and conditions noted herein cannot be reduced and may be modified or superceded by the terms by right of jurisdictional authority, supplier(s) or VisitIreland. In addition, all terms and conditions of any and all suppliers at the time of travel will apply.

Terms and Conditions of Vehicle Rental and Use
Vehicle Rental Schedule, Details and Substitutions
VisitIreland contracts with
number of different vehicle rental companies that operate a multitude of facilities.
Hours of operation vary by country, company, location and season and may be
subject to change at any time. Vehicle pickup and drop off are specific and
guaranteed as to provider, location, date and time. If a vehicle as booked
is unavailable the supplier has the right to offer a reasonable alternative.
It is the sole responsibility of the traveler to inform rental vehicle provider
directly of any and all necessary changes or delays. It is especially important
to adhere to this schedule at all locations other than major airports, which
may keep limited holiday, weekend and evening hours. VisitIreland is not responsible
for any and all traveler delays and inconveniences or costs associated with
the failure to adhere to a specific vehicle rental schedule and details.
Responsibility of vehicle use and the driver
Specific Provider terms and conditions
It is the sole responsibilities of the driver to adhere and ensure all passengers adhere to all local and national motoring laws and driving requirements.
All vehicles must be used in a manner consistent with the specific vehicle provider’s terms and conditions. VisitIreland contracts from various major rental vehicle suppliers in Ireland and Great Britain. Should the traveler have specific concerns about vehicle usage they should contact the supplier directly for assistance and clarification prior to vehicle collection. All rental vehicles must be used in accordance with any and all requirements set forth by the supplier at the time of vehicle collection.
Acceptance and Use of Vehicles
Use of all vehicles must conform to and is governed by national and local laws,
as well as, the individual car rental company’s specific terms and conditions,
which are in place at the time of vehicle pickup (click here to review an overview
of the general terms and conditions of vehicle use. Please note: that these
vehicle terms and conditions are a synopsis of general terms and conditions
and are for guideline purposes only). All requirements set forth by the supplier
supercede any and all terms and conditions stated herein. VisitIreland cannot
be held liable for circumstances that may arise due to specific car rental
company rental policies and/or fleet allocation. Acceptance of all rental vehicles
by the traveler at the time of pickup will signify approval of the vehicle
provided. If for any reason the vehicle provided is deemed unacceptable while
in use it is the sole responsibility of the traveler to take up this issue
directly with the supplier. In the event of unresolved dissatisfaction with
a particular vehicle VisitIreland must be informed immediately upon arrival
at their travel destination.
Use of Vehicles
Major Credit Card Requirement
Rental vehicles MAY NOT be taken off the island of Ireland or Great Britain
at any time. Additionally, vehicles MAY NOT be transported from between
the Isles of Ireland and Great Britain. For travelers who book both Ireland
and Great Britain self-drive vacations VisitIreland will arrange for
separate vehicle rentals for each country. All vehicles must be used in
a manner consistent with the specific vehicle provider’s terms and conditions.

Most vehicle rental companies require that a valid Visa or MasterCard in good standing be presented in the name of the primary driver at the time of vehicle collection (debit and bank cards may not be accepted). This applies to all rentals including full prepays and inclusions in packaged self-drive vacations.
One Driver Included
Included in the pricing of all Self-drive vacations is all required (mandatory) insurance for one (1) legal driver who meets standard drivers license requirements as outlined below.
Standard Drivers License Requirements
All named drivers must hold and present a valid full-unendorsed national drivers license at the time of vehicle rental (Endorsements are driving violations on record and include speeding and unpaid parking fines. Endorsements for parking violations and minor speeding violations are acceptable). All drivers must be aged between 25 to 72 years and must have held a full driver's license for at least 24 months prior to vehicle rental. All drivers must present themselves with their full-unendorsed driver's license and International Drivers License (if required) at the pick up location at the time of rental. Holders of valid US, Canadian, Australian and All EU member states are NOT required to supply an International Driving License (IDL). An International Driving License (IDL) is required if your national driver's license is not in Roman script (alphabet used in the English Language). International driver's licenses MUST BE accompanied by the original domestic license of the driver.
Age Requirements, Restrictions and surcharges for young and senior drivers and vehicle type/class
Typical minimum and maximum age to rent a vehicle is as follows: minimum - 25 years maximum – 72 years. Under certain circumstances young drivers aged 21 years or more and senior drivers up to and including 75 MAY be acceptable. Young and senior drivers are subject to special approval and may be subject to additional surcharges that are NOT included in the package price. In addition, higher excess amounts (deductibles) may apply. The typical minimum age to be a named driver in a minivan, minibus, larger and luxury automobiles is at least 25 years. In some cases this minimum age may be extended to 30 years. The maximum age to be a named driver in a minivan, minibus or luxury vehicle rental is typically 70 years.
Speeding, Parking and other Endorsements/ Fines
Speeding - Parking and other Endorsements/ Fines are the responsibility of the hirer in full. Irish Vehicle Rentals accepts no responsibility for any fine or payment. The renter is obliged to inform Irish Vehicle Rentals of any fines or parking tickets issued whilst the renter is using the vehicle.
Vehicle Types and Availability
Vehicle rental companies operate a fleets with many different makes and models. Therefore, VisitIreland cannot guarantee specific makes or models.
Use of Infant/Child Seats and Seat Belts
Infant/Child seats are available by notification at the time of booking and are provided at an additional cost (paid locally). Child seats are NOT typically available for infants under 6 months old. It is the responsibility of the renter to adhere to all national and local laws and jurisdictional requirements governing the use of seat belts and Infant/Child seats.
Upon collection of your vehicle you may be charged for a full tank of fuel. It is the sole responsibility of the traveler to request details of the fuel policy of the rental vehicle company at the time of vehicle collection. Furthermore, it is the sole responsibility of the traveler to ensure that they are given proper credit for any or all fuel charges.
Airport Fee and Premium Location collection fees (Republic of Ireland)
Vehicle rentals at airports and premium locations (typically major cities) in The Republic of Ireland may subject to an additional service fee of €21.00 to €26.00 Euro. If applicable this fee will be charged directly by the car hire company and must be paid locally by the traveler at the time of vehicle collection.
Other Local Fees Including Road Fund Tax (RFT) and Licensing
Depending on the vehicle companies pricing policy and jurisdictional requirements some rentals may incur a small daily charge for licensing, road tax, etc. (for example a road tax of approximately €1.00 per day Ireland may be charged in the Republic of Ireland). If applicable this fee will be charged directly by the car hire company and must be paid locally by the traveler at the time of vehicle collection.
Cross Border Vehicle Use – Ireland and Northern Ireland
Should you wish to drive a rental vehicle collected from a location in The Republic of Ireland to Northern Ireland or a rental vehicle collected from a location in Northern Ireland to The Republic of Ireland you are obligated to inform the vehicle rental company prior to leaving the rental facility. The vehicle rental company may apply nominal charges locally to cover additional associated expenses such as cross border breakdown cover (roadside assistance). In addition, special terms and conditions may apply.
Cross Country Vehicle Hire – Ireland and Great Britain
Vehicles cannot be taken off the isles of Ireland or Great Britain at any time. Additionally, vehicles cannot be transported between the Isle of Ireland and Great Britain.
Late fees, special handling charges, modifications and outside agreements
In some instances early and late vehicle pickup and drop-off fees may be charged locally by the vehicle rental company for service outside of normal business hours. In addition, special handling requests and drop fees may apply and be charged. Additional fees may also apply for vehicle changes, use and booking modifications by the traveler. Under no circumstances shall VisitIreland be held accountable for any vehicle rental modifications or outside agreements.
Insurance Included and Optional
Mandatory and Optional Insurance
In Ireland, Northern Ireland and Great Britain there are various types of vehicle insurances. All mandatory insurance is included in this package for one (1) legal driver. Standard excess (deductibles) apply as set forth by the car hire company. Excess amounts are set by and by and vary by company and vehicle make and model. These typically range from €500 to €1,000 in Ireland and £500 to £1,000 in the Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Vehicle rental companies routinely offer the following additional types of optional insurances. These are not included in your package and are not required. If you wish to purchase additional coverage you must do so directly from the vehicle rental company at the time of vehicle pickup.
Collision Damage Insurance (Included)
This option limits your financial liability for damage to the vehicle, its parts and accessories, except theft, attempted theft or vandalism, provided the vehicle is used in accordance with the terms and conditions of the rental agreement and is subject to excess (deductible).
Third Party Insurance (Included)
This covers the required additional liability to third parties provided the vehicle is used in accordance with the terms and conditions of the rental agreement and is subject to excess (deductible).
Theft Loss insurance (Included)
This insurance option limits your financial liability for loss or theft of the rental vehicle, its parts and accessories, provided the vehicle is used in accordance with the terms and conditions of the rental agreement and is subject to excess (deductible).
Additional Named Drivers (Not Included)
Additional licensed drivers in good standing can be added and paid locally for a nominal additional charge per day per driver (rates vary by vehicle and the supplier). Although rates vary typical charges for automobiles range from €5 to €15 per driver per day in Ireland and £3 to £10 for Great Britain and Northern Ireland. All additional named driver rates are set by individual suppliers and cannot be guaranteed. Luxury, SUV and Van/Mini-bus rates are higher. All stated restrictions and limitations in this document and set forth by the vehicle supplier also apply to all additional drivers. This insurance is optional and must be purchased locally.
Super Damage Waiver Insurance (Not Included)
In addition to standard CDW cover SDW may typically be purchased as additional protection. Super Damage Waiver Insurance (SDW) reduces liability limit in the event of accidental damage to the vehicle to a low of €100 in Ireland and £100 in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Although rates vary typical charges for automobiles range from €5 to €15 per driver per day in Ireland and £5 to £10 for Great Britain and Northern Ireland. This insurance is optional and must be purchased locally.
Personal Accident Insurance (Not Included)
This insurance covers expenses for personal injuries or fatality. This insurance is optional and must be purchased locally. Rates vary by vehicle supplier and insurance carrier. Typical rates are €5 to €7 per person per day in Ireland and £4 to £6 for Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
